Our Guiding Principles

OUR VISION       The Educational Partnership Center creates collaborative, college-bound communities. We engage collective, critical imagination to support and improve higher education opportunities for all children. We seek practical solutions to ensure the democratic promise of education and bring together diverse groups in the spirit of responsible innovation to make equal opportunity real.

OUR MISSION   The mission of the Educational Partnership Center is to create college-bound communities that improve student learning and increase college-going rates among students from low-income and traditionally non-college-going families in collaboration with school, college, business, and community partners.

OUR GOALS

1.  Building lasting, flexible partnerships with schools, colleges, businesses, and the community to align services, vertically and horizontally, eliminating duplication and inefficiencies and creating synergy for greater impact on student achievement.

  • We serve communities across Monterey, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz Counties: 17 high schools, 17 middle schools, 13 regional community colleges, and 9 school districts.
  • Community Action Councils will support our GEAR UP partnerships in Watsonville/Pajaro Valley and north and south Monterey County.
  • Our Industry Advisory Board will convene business and industry leaders.
  • Since 1999, we have leveraged more than $36 million to support student academic preparation efforts and educational partnerships.

2.  Offering a range of high-quality services to schools and colleges to raise student achievement and improve student learning.

  • The number of students completing algebra by eighth grade increased from 18.2% to 25.6% (2005-06, PVUSD), with a total increase of more than 20% from the baseline year.
  • More than 80% of mathematics teachers from partner middle schools in PVUSD participated in professional development.
  • The number of underrepresented students completing the A-G course pattern in 2005-06 increased by 14% because of our efforts to raise teacher expectations, improve school systems to articulate A-G courses, work with school leadership on master scheduling issues, and improve instruction through teacher professional development.

3.  Developing and implementing a range of consistent services to students and families to support success on the college pathway.

  • We increased the number and percentage of college-going students from our partnership schools: the number of students attending the UC system increased from 267 in 2001 to 391 in 2005, up by more than 46% (2005-06).
  • We doubled the number of underrepresented students attending the UC system from our partnership schools (2005-06).
  • Through the Transfer Partnerships Program, we directly served 509 students, an increase of 147.1% over 2004-05, and transfer rates from the 13 regional community colleges have steadily increased over the last eight years.
