Girls in Engineering brings 7th and 8th grade girls with an interest in mathematics together on the UC Santa Cruz campus for a unique introduction to engineering. Students from across Santa Cruz and north Monterey Counties get hands-on exposure to engineering through fun projects, such as building and programming a robot. The program enables girls to imagine themselves as future engineers and exposes them to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) college and career pathways. Students learn about a variety of topics, including robotics, computer science, electrical and civil engineering, applied mechanics,environmental engineering, and biomedical engineering.
- Build and program a motorized robot
- Construct bridges, sail-cars, and tower prototypes
- Meet women engineers
- Tour research labs at the engineering school
- Travel on a fun field trip
- Explore the UCSC campus and experience college life
- Learn how to prepare for college
- Explore engineering career options
- Attend special Discovery Lectures
- Learn about other STEM opportunities - COSMOS, MESA & science fairs

Middle school girls in 7th and 8th grades from Santa Cruz and north Monterey Counties with strong mathematics skills are encouraged to apply; preference will be given to students currently enrolled in Algebra I. About 30 students will be accepted into the program at no cost. Free round-trip transportation to the UCSC campus and lunch will be provided. The application deadline is April 1, 2009.
