MBEC Teacher Workforce Initiative

Focus Area:

Research

The goal in this area of focus is to develop a sustainable system of collecting and distributing relevant research and current-year teacher workforce data. Using the data, educational leaders develop and monitor regional strategies to address the dynamics of teacher supply and demand and teacher workforce quality and effectiveness.

Automated Data Collection System for Teacher Workforce Data:

The TWI Research Team oversees the automated data collection system housed at the UCSC Education Department. This system is used to collect current-year California Basic Educational Data System (CBEDS) data each fall and produce an in-depth analysis of the status of the teacher workforce by February of the same school year for the K-18 agencies. Customized data reports for individual districts, counties as well as the tri-county region are provided.

Resource for Working Committees:

The TWI Research Team facilitates the work of the four working committees by providing timely research and data in their areas of focus.

Presentation of Regional Data:

The Research Team develops a data presentation for the annual regional meeting of educational and community leaders and for other related events.

Tri-County Teacher Exit Questionnaire:

The questionnaire was implemented in May 2005. The annual analysis of the resulting data is provided by the UCSC Education Department with the assistance of the TWI Research Team.

Ed-Join Data:

All districts with 500+ student enrollment and the three county offices of education in the region now utilize the Ed-Join online electronic job posting and application process. The data from the Ed-Join service provides an in-depth look each year at where the region's teacher applicants come from and what are their experiences and qualifications. The Research Team provides an annual analysis of this data.

Case Studies:

A member of the Research Team, serving on the Hard-to-Staff Schools Committee, is overseeing the development of selected case studies of three regional schools that are making noteworthy progress in retaining effective teachers and increasing student achievement. The case studies will provide examples of exemplary practices in these schools to share with others.

Annual Collection of Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) First-Time Credential Recommendations:

The region now has the capacity to collect the number of first-time credentials, by subject areas, issued by each of the four local teacher preparation programs. The data is collected every September for the prior school year.

Having accurate local data about our teaching workforce will help us to understand the challenges confronting our schools and drive the development of regional strategies to strengthen our teaching workforce.
