MBEC Teacher Workforce Initiative

Focus Area:

Hard to Staff Schools

The goal in this area of focus is to attract and maintain fully credentialed, effective and experienced teachers in the region's hardest to staff schools. The efforts center on increasing the region's capacity to provide high quality professional development that meets the needs of the teachers and establishes these schools as compelling places to teach.

Case Studies:

The committee is developing case studies of three schools that are making noteworthy progress in retaining effective teachers and increasing student achievement for the purpose of sharing best practices with others.

Tri-County Teacher Exit Questionnaire:

The questionnaire was implemented in May 2005. The annual administration of the questionnaire is an ongoing effort to look at the reasons teachers give for leaving a school, a district or the profession. The data from the region's lowest performing, often the hardest to staff, schools will be used in the design of professional development plans to better meet the needs of the teaching staff.

Tracking Progress:

The committee is tracking critical data elements on the lowest performing and hardest to staff schools in the region to provide an ongoing picture of the progress of these targeted schools.

Together we are addressing the shortage of credentialed teachers and preparing the teacher workforce for the educational challenges we face, especially in schools serving socio-economically disadvantaged students.
