Teachers

Welcome

COSMOS engages local math and science high school teachers in many ways. Please read below to find out how you can be involved.

COSMOS

COSMOS is a state funded academic enrichment program for talented students completing grades 8-12. During the four-week experience, students take courses from university faculty while living on the UC Santa Cruz campus. Courses extend well beyond the traditional high school curriculum, and classes are supplemented with laboratory work and field trips.

Participating as a Teacher Fellow

The COSMOS Teacher Fellows program provides opportunities for outstanding high school teachers to participate in the UC Santa Cruz COSMOS summer program. Each Fellow works with a team of university faculty to implement the academic portion of COSMOS. Teacher Fellows serve as the pedagogical bridge between high school student learning and university faculty teaching. They directly participate in all classroom and laboratory work as well as field trips (Monday - Friday 8:30-4:30). They serve a valuable role as liaison between the residential and academic programs. Teacher Fellows may also be called upon to consult with faculty on course design, provide supplemental instruction, mentor students, and supervise course projects. To read about other Teacher Fellows and their COSMOS experiences, we invite you to watch this VIDEO or to visit the main UCOP website by going to the UCOP COSMOS Website.

Applying to be a Teacher Fellow (aka Learning Skills Counselor)

The COSMOS Teacher Fellow positions are now posted online at the UCSC Staff Employment website. They are posted as “Principle Learning Skills Counselor” (aka Teacher Fellow/TF) and “Senior Learning Skills Counselor” (aka Sr. Teacher Fellow/STF).

To apply please visit the UCSC Staff Employment website and search by job number.

Expanded Teacher Fellow (ETF) Program

In 2008, UCSC COSMOS and the Cal Teach program piloted an Expanded Teacher Fellow Program, which paired returning COSMOS Teacher Fellows with Teacher Fellows who are new to the program. We are in the process of securing funding to again offer this enhanced Teacher Fellow program to outstanding new and returning Teacher Fellows. Teacher Fellows selected to be a part of the ETF program will be required to meet more often as a group than standard Teacher Fellows. ETFs will also (1) attend a 3 day Inquiry Workshop prior to COSMOS and (2) be responsible for developing an inquiry-based lesson plan and teaching it to your cluster during COSMOS. There are increased stipends for Teacher Fellows participating in the expanded clusters.

If you are interested in applying for these expanded positions, please indicate your interest in your online application when the positions are posted. Returning Teacher Fellows interested in the ETF program should submit applications for both the “Senior Learning Skills Counselor” (aka Sr. Teacher Fellow) positions and the “Principle Learning Skills Counselor” (aka Teacher Fellow) positions in case there is no funding for the ETF program or there are more applicants than positions available.

*Please note that if you take on a Senior Teacher Fellow position that your role with the COSMOS program will be different than the standard Teacher Fellow roles. You will spend less time in the classroom with the COSMOS cluster students and take on curriculum development and mentoring responsibilities for both the new Teacher Fellow and two Cal Teach interns. Cal Teach is a program for community college and UC undergraduate STEM majors who aspire to teach science or math at the middle- or high school level.

Sharing Resources

COSMOS and Cal Teach currently oversee the Educational Partnership Center’s ScienceShare Lending Library. This program is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation and makes scientific equipment and materials available to teachers in the Monterey Bay region. These resources are owned by the University of California, Santa Cruz. Ultimately, this program aims to be an easy-to-use central clearinghouse of information through which the many departments and programs within UCSC can connect with members of the K-12 community, and through which science teachers can access university resources. Click here to go to the Educational Partnership Center ScienceShare Lending Library website to see how to participate in this program.
