What to Bring

We have done our best to provide you with a comprehensive list of things that students will need while at COSMOS on the UCSC campus. While packing, think about the things that will make you feel comfortable while you are away from home. In case you forget something, small items can be purchased at local stores.

Essential:

  • Clothing for both hot and cold weather. Note: The more clothing you bring, the less often you’ll have to do laundry. Summer fog in Santa Cruz means mornings and evenings are quite chilly.
  • Closed-toe walking shoes. Note: The UCSC campus is large and has many steep hills. Students will need to have comfortable shoes suitable for walking moderate distances.
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, hairbrush, etc.
  • Sunscreen
  • Sheets & blankets or sleeping bag (it gets cold at night!). Extra long sheets accommodate the beds best, but other sheets work as well.
  • Pillow & pillowcase
  • Towels: for shower and pool/beach
  • Quarters for the laundry machines and small box of laundry detergent.
  • Medication: All medication must be cleared by a staff member. COSMOS staff cannot administer any medications so students should bring anything they may need.
  • Pens, paper, and notebook
  • Cluster-specific items (identified in a separate email, if necessary)
  • Alarm clock

Optional:

  • Computer (students will have access to computer labs on campus, but access is limited during peak times)
  • Coat hangers
  • Backpack
  • Swimsuit
  • Shower shoes
  • Telephone (All rooms have active phone jacks with local access)
  • Pre-paid calling card for the phones (These are for sale on campus)
  • Cell phones (for use during rec time only)
  • Camera & film
  • Radio or Walkman
  • Sports equipment (Some will be provided)
  • Movies or games
  • Calculator (We will have some available for students to use.)
  • Spending money. Note: Students should not need much spending money while at COSMOS. Three meals will be provided every day, including field trips. All expenses for extracurricular activities and excursions are included in the COSMOS tuition.

Please Do Not Bring:

  • An automobile
  • Valuable items
  • Pagers
  • Weapons, fireworks, explosives, candles
  • Drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes
  • Skateboards or rollerblades (Not permitted on campus)
  • Pets (Not permitted on campus – including Opening and Closing Day)
